This pandemic is unprecedented in modern times, and your players and fans are trying to find their way in the new normal. Don’t wait to talk to your customers about the subject or expect them to bring it up first. As a Sports Organizer or coach, you should acknowledge the issues and outline your plan of action. Take charge of the situation, whether it be when you will restart practice and games, or if refunds are an option.
Acknowledge that there will be problems, that you are doing your best to resolve them. If there are cashflow concerns due to the pandemic tell your players if there have been commitments made for venues or staff that cannot be refunded, explain the reasons in human terms that your players understand.
This one is pretty straightforward but sometimes gets lost when responding to a crisis. Once you have a plan of action, how do communicate it? This is all about understanding what way to talk to your customers. This means, knowing how your players, fans, parents communicate with you (SMS, Whatsapp), understanding where they get news about your league (Facebook, Instagram), how your parents learn about your sessions, or how fans watch your games (FB Live, Youtube). Then use those channels to get your message out.
This does go back to knowing your customers, but in most situations involving your players or parents by asking for their opinions gives them a sense of being able to contribute to what may seem like a tough situation. Provide them the chance to give back to the sports league they love, or offer solutions for venues, or ways to schedule games post the lockdown.
These are tough times, and your players are upset at not being able to play. Give them hope by being generous and paying forward. Offer a free session if they are able to keep their business with you. Organize a team photo session, or offer free merchandise to show you value your players. Sometimes even the smallest kindness builds the goodwill with players that you’d need to be able to continue business.
